Oh Singapore, you're so fine !
By the title, one might suspect I'm gg to pay a tribute to our young nation with her 45th birthday just round the corner. Oh no no no no no. That's not what I'm about to say. What I wish to discuss or rather complain here is the 'fine' spirit of Singapore which has recently seeped into a new corner of this little island ! Yes! For the clever ones, the MRT trains !!! It so happens that I glanced at the TV today and so happens that I saw this news on channel U's 11pm news where a reporter was invited to go on these spot-check rounds with a MRT staff on the trains. Not to mention that I hardly consider this news important enough to be put into a clip and shown on a golden 30mins of news time, but what's disturbing is that the MRT staff not just go ard disturbing adults, but also went round dishing out warnings (maybe fines =Z) to mothers whose babies are so cute and innocently sucking on their milk bottles (regardless of their content). He kindly offered to bring them to the staff office of the next station to let the babies finish their unfinished business BUT they have to stop their action of drinking now cos it's fineable by law. (to which a mother replied no need cos she needs to rush to destination). Hmm... very fine example of law enforcement, very fine haul for the staff that day & a very fine alternative solution given, all's fine, except... I wonder if the babies will be fine if the bottles were wanked away from them (that incidentally wasn't shown on the clip). Heaven knows, the cuties might just turn into bawling monsters the next moment if they were inflicted with thirst and hunger. The point is aren't we becoming too fine that it's become inflexible ? I dun mind if adults have to bear with the thirst for a ride that can sometimes last longer than an hour (on an island less than 50km in length) cos our physique should be still fine with that, but it's NOT FINE to extend that rule to teethless babies. That just adds another discouraging factor to have babies. Who knows, maybe the next time the news clip will show a poor brute on the verge of a heart attack but got fined for taking his pills with water. Saved life but burned pocket. Tsk tsk tsk.
To cut the alr very long story short, I think as our nation steps into its 45th year of independence, we ought to rethink about some of our methods of doing things. Law is good, but I hope we all bear in mind that 法外有情. Do not let our reputation as a fine city spread get a booster to its pun.

Despicable me. Me? No, no, no, not me.
* Warning !!! May contain spoilers.
Today, took a tiny breather by walking to the cathay near my house to watch 'Despicable me'. As described by Ziwei, it was an entertaining movie, with a great blend of hilarious and touching moments. Hmm... how should I describe the afterthoughts lei? Firstly, it's a story about the extremely kawaii minions. Yes ! They are sooooo cute and sooooo innocent, I'm completely smitten with them. Without them, there will not be so much laughter throughout the cinema and without them, there will not be the touching moments as they are the bridge that brought the Super villian close to his 3 newfound daughters. In fact, it must be said that our lonesome villian, before finding family in the 3 new kids, had actually long found family in these minions. I strongly suspect from how he calls them out by names (even though they really look almost all alike) and asks about their families, that the villian really regards them as more than employees. Secondly, it's a story about how villians can have a childish side about them. Our villian in this case is just an attention-seeking child who wants to prove to his mum that he is capable of great things, and of course also to fulfil his dream of flying to the moon which I bet is also the dream of most children. Albeit his means of doing so is erhem... a bit controversial, but kudos to his determination to fulfil his dream, even though he's broke already. Lastly, it's a story about how the innocence of children can melt the heart of the greatest evil. It's about how blood ties do not really matter because it's the heart that really tells. The best thing about children is that they alawys return you 10 times more than what you have given them. Hence the power and charm. Do not apply this equation to adults though as you will most probably be severely disappointed.
All in all, this is a good movie that I will recommend to whoever who wants to relax a bit, but doesn't want to waste $$$ watching a stupid comedy. Only a small problem though, I wonder what the villian is going to survive on now that he's got no funding from the villian's bank, has turned over a new leaf, and has 3 extra mouths to feed. Hmmm.... food for thought.

detrimental dental visit
wonder if you guys share the same sentiment as I do.... I HATE, ABHOR, DETEST, DISLIKE, LOATHE visits to the dentist. and no exceptions today. the visit to the dentist today = dread, dismay and destitution. dread because i had a bad tooth fixed that required local anasthesia (wa, i had a shock of my life coz i never had the experience of having a needle into my gums). not only that, i was the guinea pig (or it seems so) for him to try out all his cool, elaborate dental tools. look, he has his laser thingy that beeps whenever a bad tooth/decay is present. more than x beats and one has to undergo immediate filling. dismay because i have an inkling this dr dentist has been overcharging me, and now he's cajoling me into getting all my 4 wisdom teeth extracted so he can earn more buckeroos. he subjected me to a full buccal cavity x-ray, in preparation for the wisdom teeth op he thinks he'll clinch. instead, i told him x-ray film i take, but op no. anyway, op is not so urgent, i can do it when i return next year. (right, i'll source for another dentist!). besides, i'll be travelling quite a fair bit over this period, so spare me the knife and swelling (and pain)! destitution because i'm ~400 bucks less rich/more poor. ok, yes, i get to claim 100 buckeroos... but whichever way you look at it, it's bad. sigh... despicable him! ah.... i shall turn in early, hopefully the numbness wears off completely by tomorrow. :/

Magnum
As I was feeling rather moody and stressed up about the routine HLA group meeting every Wednesday morning, I had a sudden craving for Magnum ice cream. Today was a another crazy hectic day for me and I honestly need some ice cream to perk me up for tomorrow's meeting...
On my way home, Daddy told me he will be going out again to the petrol station to pump petrol after dinner and in my heart I tried to tempt myself to make the trip with him so that I can buy ice cream. But fatigue set in the moment I sat on my sofa for dinner and so Daddy made the trip there alone without me having a chance to tell him I wanted ice cream. :(
But when I was reading this blog and surfing my daily dose of facebook and thinking about having a Magnum ice cream, my dad came back with a bag in his hand! I peeped and found Magnum ice cream in the bag as a surprise!!! :):) Well, I thought the only ice cream that exists in Daddy's world was cornetto but he actually bought Magnum!!! For a moment I seriously think we share some form of telepathy. How does he know I wanted ice cream (Magnum ice cream to be specific)??? Hahaha... My Daddy's the best!!! :p
After savouring the wonderful thick chocolate ice cream, he came into my room and said: "The ice cream very nice hor???" Looks like more Magnum will be making their way into my home's freezer soon!!!
Magnum makes me a happy girl! :)

But....There were bed bugs!!!!!!! We didn't realize til the next few days..see the next pic.
so annoyed by the bed bug bites thru'out the whole trip dat i kept snapping pics of my ugly legs (i dunno for what also)... Feel itchy just by looking at the pics!!!! all 4 of us dio.

Anyway..we had lunch at a place called "Ah Ma de Shi1 Fang2 Cai4" (too lazy to type chinese sorry.) Wahhhh this is easily the best dish we had in taiwan.. looks so unappetizing and plain but it's SUPERRRR yummy! *drool* it's some kinda bamboo shoot which I doubt you can find in Sg. sad..
salted pork. a bit salty but still yumz.

we bought similar tops from the same shop at Shihlin night market.. I think nice WAD
we were suffering from the crazy hot weather *sweat*
world cup, award ceremony and other random things
i must admit that i'm no soccer fan, but i confessed to have pulled an all nighter just for the world cup finals to see the showdown between the Dutch and the Spaniards. i am also embarrassed to admit that this was the first time i actually sat through an entire soccer match. still cannot fathom what exactly makes soccer fans go gaga over the google box, missing almost an entire night of beauty sleep. much to my dismay, the match was quite disappointing. there wasn't a team i was particularly rooting for since the start of this season games, though i admit i have a penchant for spain to win the world cup last night because i could speak a tad of spanish (lousy reason i know, but that's the slightest affiliation i could think of. dutch - no link) both teams played defensively for most parts, explaining why there wasn't enough adrenaline pumping in my system to keep me 100% awake. i was hoping that either of the teams score a goal within 90 mins so i won't have to sit through the extra time... but much to my dismay again... they played the extra time, with lady luck on spain's side after the referee counted the "offsite" goal in. and paul the clairvoyant octopus got it right again!!! paul paul el pulpo, espana gano el Mundial!! the spanish government ought to buy it over lest it ends up as sashimi on German plates.
i miss my beauty sleep... not very wise, considering there was a whole day of rehearsals going on for tomorrow's award ceremony. we tried to rock the stage (sorry, wanted to upload a photo, but blogger wouldn't let me). and by the time i got home today, i crashed on my bed. will have to report to fusiono again at 9:30am tomorrow.... haha, if you guys are free, swing by fusiono and steal a glance at our breathtaking, astounding performance... hurhurhur...;p
not sure if we are talking about this same guy, but a fellow scholar friend missed rehearsal today to attend the wake of his friend who died of heart failure. it's grief beyond description to know of a friend who passed on before you. i recall a fellow Singaporean badger (we call ourselves from UW badger coz it was our school mascot) who passed on last year because of an acute meningcoccal meningitis infection. it was a complete shocker to me. though i didn't know her very well, i remember vividly she used to serve me meals in my dorm as she was working part-time at my dorm's dining hall. yea, treasure all your loved ones around you - even in lab. it's easier said than done though... i do think constant encouragement and reassurance from one another would be helpful. remember my close shave with "death" last year ( the car accident in malaysia??)? When I was back in lab that Monday, I told a few of you how thankful I am to be still alive and I thanked them for being part of my life journey. As my 1 year stint in REC lab comes to a close, I would like to thank each and everyone of you (whether you read this or not) for making a difference to my life. I thank God for making our lives cross path. ps: I am not being emo! haha...When it comes to leaving, I am not a big fan of sappy sobby endings, and this poetry by 苏轼, not a stranger to those who took C. Lit in secondary school 《水调歌头》 (ps: you don't have to take C.lit to know this.. i think Faye Wong did a cover for this) never fails to uplift me when it comes to parting ways... "人有悲欢离合,月有阴晴圆缺,此事古难全。但愿人长久,千里共婵娟。" 希望我回美国以后,我们还会千里共婵娟! :)

Feeling sad...
Today is quite an emo day.
As I dun have any blog, could only use this to tell pple who care abt one of my friend.
如果突然有一天, of of your friends called you and said: Hey, XYZ passed away yesterday le, cos of a fever.
What would you do? Sigh.. ya, this happened to me yesterday. One of my friend passed away le, his name is Chang Loong, same age as I am, went to TCHS and then NJ. Knew him when we were working at NYP at the admissions office.
He is someone who jokes a lot, loves to suan pple, brings laughter to everyone around him.
haiz. now that the above sentence got to be in the past tense le. I hate it when such things happen.
I cant imagine how his parents would react. their only son passed away. sigh.
So... must meet up with your friends whenever you can. You never know what can happen. I was hoping to meet him soon when I meet my NYP friends. Now no more le. haiz.
Sorry for the emo post.

OMG! Everyone should check this !
Haha. My second post of the day. Not I too sian, but just thought should share with everyone before I forget.
First, thanks to Wei ping for her hilarious account of the 'alien' incident. Much more spiceful than her 'by mouth' narration. I was laughing to myself, and I think my sis who's sitting next to me must be thinking I am mad. =D
Now, to the point of this title. Today, on the way home, at the mrt station, I suddenly remembered that yesterday I saw on the news that pple traveling on bus toJ ohor bahru complained abt fare hike due to the new fare system. So I curiously went to check my card for the past traveling history. And to my surprise (or rather I half expected it), I found that my fare increased 12cents. That means for a month (assume 22 workdays), I pay 12*2*22=$5.28 more, and thus ard $60 more per year. Hmm.. I can buy a bag or a discounted pair of sports shoes (which I meant to buy long ago) with that u know. (sounding like wei ping now, oh no tsk tsk tsk)
Now, the point is I think everyone ought to be aware of how much the new system is gg to affect their pocket. So go check the next time u use the public tpt system.
P.S. Can any bright brain kindly highlight to me which is the shortest route to get to buona vista from woodlands which definitely will not meet up with traffic jams in the morning rush, and will take the shortest time? =Z

Close shave fighting with kungfu master

It was a sunny afternoon and we (kenneth, bao luo, tse hau, sylvia and me) had a very full lunch at commonwealth... Just on the way back to lab, as usual, we will bypass the "grassland" next to immunos building... Everything runs right as a routine manner and we will surely by pass the "golden" telescope outside the Khansama restaurant. All of a sudden, my arms (Flexors) brush over something that is spiky and a bit rough. My mind was like "hmm? whats that?"
Normal reflex for me is to "bioh" (eyes aiming at an angle) near my thigh area... Just like "Lighting strike" on me when I saw a green palm-sized alien steering at me... My mind was in "Blank" and only thing I could do is to call for help.... "Help...! Help me....!"
Baoluo walking nearest to me, heard my cries, turn his back (looking like a hero to me) and stretch out his......
"LEG...!"
and wanted to squash the praying mantis on my thigh.... Just as his right shoe going to hit me (maybe a few more inchs), he suddenly pause and retreat.... (I think maybe baoluo was worried that his kick might hurt me...)
As I was screaming, in the next second, 2 of the guys in front (kenneth and tse hau) came behind baoluo and trying to help me....
Both of them have weapons with them, tse hau trying to use his card (with card holder) hoping to sweep away the praying mantis... but.... he pondered...
On the other hand, kenneth using his 铁沙掌 (ultimate hand) quickly sweep over the praying mantis...
THE PRAYING MANTIS instead of going down, it climbs up NEARER to my body.... and I shouted "ARHHHH!!!!!" and within a second, the praying mantis missed his balance and drop to the ground.... Most likely is when Kenneth sweep it, even it move up nearer to my body, it still cannot balance himself from the impact Kenneth hits it or maybe...... I was thinking..... is my high pitch sound wave that hits the praying mantis and loses his balance...
Well anyway, i retreat when it falls onto the ground and all of us evacuated from the site.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank baoluo, tse hau and kenneth for their herotic and courage act to really stand near me and help me.. I really apppreciate from my bottom of my heart... Without you guys, at this point in time (night time 8.38pm), i might be still standing near the telescope, shouting till out of voice.... and feeling hungry.....
P.S. Above are all true but with exaggerating contents to spice up my post....
Sick liaoz
Haizzzzzzz......
Over the weekend, I fell sick. As usual, it started with the throat, goes to the nasal cavity and predicted outcome will be for the bacteria or virus (whichever evil fellow it is) to retreat back to the larynx. Then I will have to buy my house's traditional cough remedy, 海底椰止咳露again for a price of ard $4. All the familiar protocol steps again, as I remember I fell sick x times ard this time of the year last year also. And oh yar, Kenneth will then say 'shoo, shoo, stay away from me'. Unsympathetic guy.
kk, sign off for now. cos Kenneth complaining beside me now. From his mouth 'Why, waste your time on the recruit thing'. so I not waste time, walk into lab now.

Hahaha....
Today I couldn't come into the office via the lab door lor :(
Usually the lab door magnet doesn't hold the door tightly, so I can always come in. Today I had to wait outside the main door for someone to walk by....
Looks like Boss's mood today quite okay ..... so maybe later meeting with him shouldn't be a big problem =S
